A Wildlife Stone Garden - Gritstone Stone Garden Landscape
For this bespoke stonework project, our brief was to fully design a stone garden landscape, in sympathy with existing plants and terrain, along with special attention given to wildlife and use one hundred percent recycled stone from around the garden.
The rebuilt 1.8metre high dry stone wall in the background is of lancashire Bowland mixed colour gritstone and the remaining stone in the foreground is a mixture of fine sandstone, slate and buff gritstone.
One of the specific requirements of this stone garden landscape was to provide many recesses holes and feeding stations between/ on the stones for a resident population of young Hedgehogs, Yellow necked Field Mice, Crested Newts, Frogs, Toads and Common Lizards; amongst a rich variety of Butterflies, Moths, Hover Flies, bees and many small birds including Wrens, Yellow Wagtails, Moorhens, Tree Creepers, Nuthatches, Goldfinches and pheasants.
During the summer, following works earlier in the spring, the stonework not only enhanced the overall look and feel of the garden, but was a lively hive of activity with a rich diverse wildlife....a pleasure to sit and watch throughout the day and into the evening, bats swooped across the stonework to catch moths.
